Inches Definition

An inch is a unit of measurement in the American Standard of measurements. Twelve inches equals one foot. The inch is further divided into smaller units. There are 16 units in one inch. Each unit being one-sixteenth of an inch (1/16th inch). These small 16 units are grouped into larger units called: 1/8th inch which consists of 2/16ths (2/16ths being mathematically reduced to 1/8th). Two of these 1/8th units are 1/4th inch (also commonly called a quarter of an inch). Two of these 1/4th divisions equal ½ inch (again, 2/4ths being mathematically reduced to ½). Next, three ¼ inch units equal ¾ (commonly termed “three quarters of an inch). And finally, 4 1/4th units equal 1 inch.

I'm late to the comments, but here are the answers to your problems:

Chloe: one and a half feet is equal to eighteen inches. We know this because one foot is twelve inches. So twelve plus (half of twelve, which is six) is eighteen.

Lalang: The best way to work this out is to subtract 2.5 feet (this width of the picture) from 12 feet (the width of the wall) which gives us the result 9.5 feet. This number is all the white space either side of the picture which you can then divide into two. The next step is to divide that whitespace (9.5 feet) in half, giving you 4.75 feet each side of the picture (9.5 / 2 = 4.75).

4.75 can be shown as a fraction as 4 3/4 (four and three-quarters of a foot).

Three quarters of a foot can be worked out in inches by dividing a foot into quarters. There are 12 inches in a foot, and twelve divided by four is three (12 / 4 = 3). That gives the amount of inches in a quarter of a foot, but we want three quarters. So we multiply the quarter we have found by three (3 inches x 3). This gives 9 inches.

So your answer is four feet, nine inches either side of the picture of the wall.

I suppose both answers are too late for their intended purpose, but might help someone searching for the same thing in the future.
